FGFR1 function at the earliest stages of mouse limb development plays an indispensable role in subsequent autopod morphogenesis.
Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and their receptors have been implicated in limb development. However, because of early post-implantation lethality associated with fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) deficiency, the role of this receptor in limb development remains elusive. To overcome embryonic lethality, we have performed a conditional knockout of Fgfr1 using the Cre-LoxP approach. W...
متن کاملWnt signalling during limb development.
Wnts control a number of processes during limb development--from initiating outgrowth and controlling patterning, to regulating cell differentiation in a number of tissues. Interactions of Wnt signalling pathway components with those of other signalling pathways have revealed new mechanisms of modulating Wnt signalling, which may explain how different responses to Wnt signalling are elicited in...
متن کاملHoxa-13 and Hoxd-13 play a crucial role in the patterning of the limb autopod.
Members of the Abdominal-B-related Hox gene subfamily (belonging to homology groups 9 to 13) are coordinately expressed during limb bud development. Only two genes from homology group 13 (Hoxa-13 and Hoxd-13) are specifically expressed in the developing distal region (the autopod), which displays the most complex and evolutionarily flexible pattern among limb 'segments'. We report here that tar...
متن کاملAn orphan gene is necessary for preaxial digit formation during salamander limb development
Limb development in salamanders differs from other tetrapods in that the first digits to form are the two most anterior (preaxial dominance). This has been proposed as a salamander novelty and its mechanistic basis is unknown. Salamanders are the only adult tetrapods able to regenerate the limb, and the contribution of preaxial dominance to limb regeneration is unclear. Here we show that during...
